He thought he wasn’t coming home
My dad had open heart surgery Monday. To be clear he had a quadruple coronary artery bypass. I only knew he was having some kind of open heart surgery. My mom told me three weeks before the surgery. I didn’t fully comprehend the details of the surgery, until he was open on the table.
He wouldnt talk about the surgery to anyone. He only told maybe five people and the other three didn’t know til days before. My mom, my aunt & I were all in the dark but trying to prepare. We knew it was happening between Christmas & the new year.
If you tried to talk to him about it, he ignored you or threatened to hang up the phone. He was scared. Today as he sat up in a chair for the first time since the surgery, I asked him questions. With my dad it’s rare he’ll just sit and answer any question you ask.
So today I learned, he didn’t even know all the things they were gonna do to him or might not have done it. He asked the doc before getting prepped “How many of these have you done?” (LOL) The doctors answer was “About 150 and we’ve been extremely successful.”
He said he felt more comfortable after that.
The day after his surgery I asked my mom “Was the folder on y’alls dresser marked ‘D______’s life insurance’ you’lls way of communicating?” (we are a family of horrible communication) she didn’t even know it was there! I showed it her and she teared up “my husband didn’t think he was coming home”.
